Wireless Communication Networks over TCP ATM and Lo cation Up date and Paging Policies ENEEA Indep endent Study Term Rep ort Esin Haritaoglu Wireless Communication Networks over TCP In recent years a variety of mobile computers equipp ed with wireless communication devices have b ecome p opular These computers use applications and proto cols originally develop ed for wired desktop hosts to communicate over wireless channels TCP is the most widely used transp ort proto col on these computers b ecause it is sp ecically develop ed by Arpanet for reliable data trans mission over wired networks Along with TCP a standard link layer proto col IP Internet Proto col is also develop ed by Arpanet and TCPIP is usually used together as a standard Internet Proto col Suite Although TCPIP is commonly used b oth TCP and IP are indep endent dierent typ e of proto cols and they can b e adapted for use with other proto cols eg UDPIP TCPMAC Since TCP is develop ed sp ecically for wired networks where the congestion is the primary cause of packet loss it p erforms well and provides reliable data delivery in these networks by means of endtoend ow control congestion and error control mechanisms However the endtoend p erformance of a TCP connection can suer signicant degradation in the presence of a wireless link b ecause networks with wireless link and mobile hosts incur signicant losses due to handos and characteristics of wireless transmission environment This wireless environment violates many of the assumptions made by TCP causing degraded endtoend p erformance To understand how TCP p erformance degrades severely over wireless links we should rst lo
