Last week, I introduced you to the function of crossover components (resistors, capacitors, and inductors) and we listened to music on a few different speaker drivers… with and without the addition of crossover components into the signal path. Today you’ll see how a crossover circuit can be designed to combine drivers with very different characteristics, into a coherent sounding speaker. Here is a short guide and tutorial for simulating a typical 2-way crossover using a computer to do the complicated calculations. After you’ve worked through this tutorial, explore variations on the design and come up with something new on your own! I’ve put down some suggestions for things you can do afterwords. Tutorial 1. Matlab On the Athena computing system at MIT, we have a program called Matlab which can do lots of calculations very quickly, including those with complex numbers. It also helps us visualize data in whatever way we choose. We will take advantage of this to simulate and analyze the effect of crossover networks on the responses of speaker drivers. I prepared some helpful scripts in Matlab, as well as some data on popular speaker drivers. You can download all the files from this folder: /pricem/www/esp/matlab/ and copy them to a folder (please give it a unique name) on your computer.
