Abstract The serious consequence caused by the heavy metal pollution is unevadable and is a frequent occurrence in the area of Xiangjiang River Basin. In order to control the heavy metal pollution of the Xiangjiang river basin, Hunan government issued a series of laws and regulations, policies and measures, and has got some results in the near future. But there are many problems still there in the pollution treatment of Xiangjiang river basin, such as the system of pollution control is not perfected, content loss, chaos of management agencies, etc. We can learn from other countries or areas to get better experience. Japan once suffered heavy metal pollution seriously, and Japan treats heavy metal pollution with land pollution tightly. The United States joined heavy metal pollution treatment with land development, combining with the forces of the market. The European Union countries adopt strict producer responsibility principle, and heavy metal pollution prevention extended to the whole process of production. The pollution treatment of Rhine Basin is depended on international committee, and an advanced experience of organization and coordination in the basin has been made. All the experience is worth learning by Xiangjiang River Basin. The paper is divided into four parts: The first part introduced the heavy metal pollution in Xiangjiang river basin briefly, and relevant knowledge of heavy metal and heavy metal pollution situation in Xiangjiang river basin and recent heavy metal pollution management of Xiangjiang river.
