YO~JNG Argonne NationalLaboratory,Argonne, Illinois60439 The spin-rotation and hypertine interactions in the X*2? and B22+ electronic states of 139La’60 have been studied using Doppler-free laser-induced fluorescence and molecular-beam laser4 double resonance. Observations were made for several values of u and many values of N, allowing evaluation of the principal interaction strengths and their N and u dependences for both the X and B states. The results are compared with earlier results for the isoelectronic system 13’Ba’%. 0 1986AcademicPress Inc. I. INTRODUCTION Study of the structure of the lanthanum monoxide molecule by optical spectroscopy has been continuing for many years. One of the stimuli for this work was the discovery of prominent La0 bands in the absorption spectra of S-type stars (I, 2). References to early work are summarized by Akerlind (3). The B c* X system has recently been the subject of several studies (4,5), and the rotational constants given by Bernard and Sibai (6) for this system were essential for the present work. Bacis et al. (5) evaluated the spin-rotation constant for the X2X+ ground state and the contact dipole hyperfine structure (hfs) constant b for both the ground and B2Z+ excited states.
