Amelinckx) ABSTRACT The mixed oxide (Wo,35Vo,65)205 has been studied by el- ectron microscopy and electron diffraction. The structure of this oxide can be derived from the ba- sic ReO 3 structure by a double shear mechanism. The two sets of shear planes could be directly resolved; this observation is incomplete agreement with the model pro- posed by Israelson and Kihlborg (4). Also the relative intensity of the electron diffraction spots give direct support to the interpretation of this structure as a shear structure. In latest years the technique of lattice resolution, first introduced by Menter (i), has gained considerable importance in the study of crystal structures, particularly of shear structures(2,3). The crystal structure of a new mixed oxide of tungsten and vanadium with the approximate composition (Wo,35Vo,65)205 was re- cently described by Israelson and Kihlborg (4). The structure can be considered as a shear structure in the sense defined by Wadsley and Anderson (5). It can be derived from the basic ReO structure
