We use Towers for many processes: Absorption Liquid-Liquid Extraction Distillation Gas Scrubbing De-gassing Dust Arrest Basic Separation Processes;GAS ABSORBTION Gas Absorption is the removal of a soluble gas (the solute gas) from a mixture of gases by contact with a suitable solvent. There are many examples of Gas Absorption in industrial processes. In some cases the aim is to prepare solutions of the solute gas in the solvent. e.g. Hydrogen chloride gas + water → solution + clean air. ;GAS ABSORBTION The solute is a soluble gas mixed with other gases which are insoluble. You should remember that a solute gas dissolves easier in a cold solvent. You may notice that in the previous slide not all the solute is transferred to the solvent. Perfect Extraction or Absorption is very rare. In other cases the aim may be to remove an unwanted gas from a mixture of gases before the gas is used for another purpose or before it is discharged to the air. ;LIQUID EXTRACTION ;LIQUID EXTRACTION You can see from the figure that the stages involved are contact of the solution with a solvent(s). Separation of the two liquids to give an extract consisting of solvent (S) and solute (A), and the extract liquid (B) containing traces of solute (A). The extracted liquid is usually called Raffinate. Recovery of the solute and solvent are usually by Distillation or Evaporation. Again the recovered solvent is usually re-used. ;PRESSURE VESSELS Generally, a Pressure Vessel is any storage tank or vessel with a closed system, meaning that to vent any gas an isolation valve must be opened and routed to a local, remote or flare system.
