Expertise and Environment in Translation Ricardo Muñoz Martín PETRA Research Group University of Granada The overarching goal of the research team Expertise and Environment in Translation (PETRA) is to study as many aspects of the translation process as possible under the same scope. PETRA is interested in expertise and its acquisition and development, defines competence as a set of declarative knowledge, considers intuitive problem-solving in translation as related to emergence and construction of meaning, and interprets skills acquisition and development as routine interiorization. Characteristic of PETRA’s approach are homogeneous research methodologies through internal standards, and theoretical feedback from cognitive linguistics, connectionism, situated cognition, and social constructivism. Research methods include pilot testing, sociolinguistic questionnaires, WEIS III / TOEFL / DELE tests, professionals / translation students / laypeople contrasts, test repetition, Translog 2000, no TAPs, previous typing period, length and statistical frequency to determine pause relevance, post-test questionnaires, process-product triangulation, blind product cross-evaluation, statistical and ecological validity.
