Human Resource Man.—Career Planning Development—Chap. 14 By Dr. Pete Simmons Careers--Defined Greenhaus (1987, p.6-7)—Offers a good definition of Careers: “A career is the pattern of work-related experiences (e.g., job positions, job duties, decisions, and subjective interpretations about work-related events) and activities over the span of the person’s work life”. The number of Career Changes It has been said that most people experience at least 4 major Career Changes in their lives. Other Life Events Should be considered as well Your career and other life events certainly interact with each other (having children, retiring, moving, etc.) all affect career decisions and vice versa. Career Stages It is important to remember that people go through different stages in their careers (sometimes mixed together, but they are)—1) the establishment stage (entering people—getting themselves set-up in a career), 2) the advancement stage (mid-level people—achievement, esteem and autonomy), 3) the maintenance stage (approx. 50—stabilize the gains made), 4) the retirement stage (doing other activities and/or helping shape the future of the org or of others). What stage are you in? Mentoring Relationships It is very hard often to know “What is out there” if you are relatively new to a career. Mentoring relationships are becoming very popular now—helping others becoming successful in a particular career or org. These are particularly important for minorities/protected groups (women, African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc.). One problem orgs have is they often don’t know who would be good to mentor whom and how it should be best done—this would make a good study and/or paper!! Holland’s (1996) Career Profiles Career Choice Scale—One of six personality types. 1) Realistic ( Prefers machines, equipment)—typically machinists. 2) Investigative (Prefers analytical, curious activities)—research scientists. 3) Artisitic (Prefers expressive activities)-interior decorato
