Ab tract T he metamorphic core com plex in Harkin area Inner Mongolia is studied It s core consist of Archaeozoic and Prot erozoic metamorphic complexes undergoing duct ile deformation, Its m edian layers M iddle Jurassic undergoing plastic deformation w ith low -pressure metam orphism , and Its overlays Upper Jurassic - Low Cretaceous and mass of magmatic . rocks underwent minor brittle deformat ion w ithout m etamorphism The composition and texture of the metamorphic core complex show features of symmet rical extension and asymmetric uplifting and a rapid uplifting period w it hin 130 to 100 Ma. In light of long run therm al evolution of the concerned area, the Harkin metamorphic core complex can be considered as a typical example of crust extension caused by t hermal upw elling of mant le and intrusion of magma. The Harkin area can become a w indow to look into t he structure and evolution of the North China lithosphere. Key word Metam
