Fact Sheet Microsatellite Analysis on the 3130 Series Systems Microsatellite Analysis on the Applied Biosystems 3130 Series Genetic Analyzers Introduction Microsatellites, also known as short tandem repeats (STRs), are polymor- phic DNA loci that contain a repeat sequence of 2–7 nucleotides. The number of repeats for a given locus may vary, resulting in alleles of differ- ing lengths. Data for allelic variation, the number of repeats, and allelic frequencies are available for thousands of markers across numerous organisms. The ability to choose from such a large selection of highly informative markers has made microsatellite analysis a widely accepted tool for linkage mapping studies, association studies, and identification of organisms.
