When a script is converted into the play, something new must be added, such as the music, some action or even new plots. Although these new elements make the story much easier to understand, the story itself has been more or less changed. As the saying goes, there are a thousand hamlets in a thousand readers’ eyes. However, the audience’s comprehension must be based on the directors and the actors’. There might be only ten hamlets in an audience’s eyes. Let’s take Laertes as an example. After I have read Hamlet (Act 5 Scene 2), I think Laertes was not a bad character. He was just cheated by his anger, his sense of honor and the king. Furthermore, he didn’t mean to kill Hamlet. At the beginning of this scene, Hamlet explained to Laertes in a very humble manner and was sorry for wronged him. These words might have made Laertes hesitate to go according to the plan. Besides that, I get the information from the talk between Hamlet and the king that Hamlet and Laertes were both excel at the sword play, and they were also well-matched. But why Laertes lost in the first two rounds? The answer might be that he didn’t want to attack Hamlet at all. But what made the things worse it that after the first two rounds, Hamlet said something to satirize him, which made him very angry. So Laertes eventually hit Hamlet with the poisoned sword, and he was also hurt. In the end, Laertes told Hamlet the truth, and he was also regret helping the king. ‘Exchange forgiveness with me, noble Hamlet. Mine and my father’s death come not upon you. Nor yours on me.’ That’s the last words of him. In my opinion, the death of Laertes is also a tragedy. However, Laertes in BBC’s version was quite different.
