A nine-stringer integral alum inum alloy panel is analyzed for a skin crack under central broken st ringer propagating tow ard the adjacent stringers. Comparison is made between the st ress intensity and residual strengt h results of the panel and those of a rivet stiffened panel w ith the same con- figurations. The fail safe capability of the int egral panel is not satisfactory when the crack is beyond tw o bay length, due to the crack growt h and breaking on stringer web. To improve the fail safety of the integral string- er panel, the adhesively bonded strap is chosen as crack stopper. The material of the strap is either titanium alloy or fiber-reinforced unidirectional composite laminate.
