Arendell Parrott Academy Middle School 2010 Summer Reading for 7th Graders Summer is a time to relax and enjoy a break from the academically regimented school year. However, it is important that students continue to read during the summer. Reading should be a pleasure; it opens new worlds, expands knowledge and vocabulary, and helps students become better writers. This summer we are requiring all upcoming 7th graders to read Angel on the Square by Gloria Whelan. This novel may be found in local libraries, or you may order it from any bookstore. The ISBN number is provided. During the first week of school, students will take a test on this required book which will count as a grade on the first marking period. Angel on the Square brings history alive in the form of a fictional story. The book is history that is very relevant to our world today, but it is mostly the story of a girl who grows up in the midst of terrible events beyond the control of anyone, even the Tsar. This novel is filled with delightful imagery that moves the senses and engages the reader. Sit back; relax; and enjoy this wonderful story. Additionally, we encourage students to read a minimum of 2 books from the 7th grade list. If parents verify on the bottom of this form that the student read 2 other books, he or she will receive extra credit on the first marking period.
