But often people pay little attention to it in speech. Actually, it is important in both speech and writing. Example 1: Expectoration is forbidden. Please do not spit! No spitting. What are the differences among the three sentences? Example 2: Suppose that a certain John Smith just died, his son, writing a few days later, might say, My beloved parent has joined the heavenly choir. My dear father has passed away. My father has died. My old man has kicked the bucket. Q: In what kind of situation and whom he may address? Example 3: A flea and a fly in a flue Were imprisoned, so what could they do? Said the fly, “Let us flee,” Said the flee, “Let us fly,” So they flew through a flaw in the flue. Example 4: On fours, fall in! Attention! Eyes right! Ready front! Forward march! Dismiss! Shoulder arms! What are the characteristics of these expressions? 1.2 Definition of Style What is style? No one has given a definition of style that can be accepted by most of the stylisticians. The definition of style used in this book is a general, linguistic-oriented one: Manners indicating prominent liguistic features, devices or patterns, most (or least) frequently occur in a particular text of a particular variety of language.
