Say “No” to White Pollution for Homeland Protection Qi Di, Finance Institute of Shandong Economic University When I first came to the university as a freshman last September, I noticed a phenomenon: many students liked to take food back to their dormitories with plastic bags. Therefore, there’s so much for me to think about when seeing so many plastic bags piled in the cafeteria windows. Every person, especially the university students should know the harm resulting from “white pollution”. To know more information about this, I made a plan and led the members from “Greenow Environment Association” of our university to do a survey last year. According to the 204 valid questionnaires returned, 124 students knew the harmfulness for the consumption of those “one-time” things, such as plastic bags, which showed that many students understood the trouble caused by those “one-time” plastic bags. 194 students mentioned that using such bags was unhealthy and negative to the environment. They, however, have no other choices. So that is why this “white pollution” phenomenon is still quite popular. What should we do with this? After consideration, I decided to share what I know about this with them and let them know how terrible and harmful “white pollution” is, in the hope of that they will do something to reduce this kind of pollution. First, our “Greenow Environment Association” made billboards and put them at the eye-catching places from the cafeteria to the dormitory in order to inform students of “white pollution” and the harmfulness from it. “White pollution” is a vivid description of plastic rubbish which pollutes the environment. It refers to a serious urban environment-pollution phenomenon caused by all kinds of plastic products for daily use, which are made from contour molecular compound, such as polystyrene, polypropylene, polyvinyl-chloride and so on.
