The Woman Warrior, a novel written in 1976 has attracted wide attention since its publication. Readers and critics have begunn to show their concerns over Chinese American people who live between cross-cultural background. Their lives are under mixed influences owing to the differences between the western and the oriental cultures and they struggle to find their identity in the alien society. This thesis focuses on the thematic study of cultural conflicts and integration on basis of The Woman Warrior. Firstly it introduces three typical kinds of women living between western and oriental cultures: the first-person narrator of “ I” as the protagonist, the mother Brave Orchid and the aunt Moon Orchid. Their different reactions to the cultural conflicts have affected their own destiny. Then it proceeds to analyze the reasons beneath these cultural conflicts, including the racial discrimination, the language barriers and diverse concepts on ethic values . The third part discusses how the protagonist finds her way towards cultural integration and the important signal of cultural integration: the improvement of relationship between the mother and the daughter.
